How Do I Build a Passion-Based Side Business
with ChatGPT?

What I Wish Someone Had Told Me at 50+

Doug Kalunian, retired psychiatrist and founder of Mastering Your Wellbeing Inc, smiling in a professional headshot.

If you’re a therapist or counselor over 50, and you’ve been quietly wondering whether AI is something you should be using, or something you should be afraid of, this is for you.

I’m going to answer the question honestly because often, the advice you’ll find on this topic was written by 25-year-olds for other 25-year-olds.

It tells you to automate everything, scale fast, and “build in public.”

That advice isn’t just unhelpful for someone like us in the over 50 cohort, it’s pointed in the wrong direction entirely.

So let me tell you what’s practical and what I’ve found to be helpful, as someone well over 50 and who took a number of years to figure it out.

First, the honest part: AI didn’t save my business overnight

I built Mastering Your Wellbeing Inc to help professionals over 50 start passion-based online side businesses.

For a few years, I was struggling. Stuck. And the thing I was most stuck on was probably something you might be dealing with, too.

I suffered from imposter syndrome. I was a physician trying to be an entrepreneur.

But what could I sell? And who would I consider to be my ideal audience?

I had decades of knowledge and not one consistent post to show for it.

Writer’s block plagued me almost every day. I’d sit down to share something that could genuinely help people, and nothing would come out.

But over the past year, with AI, I stopped staring at a blank page. I learned how to use AI, and realized that I was speaking to too large of an audience.

I got into coaching and was wisely advised: “When you speak to everyone, you’re speaking to no one.” So I got to thinking.

Therapists and counselors in private practice, busy, overwhelmed, doing the same thing day-in and day-out, with increasing frustration over decreasing reimbursement, increased insurance company demands, and time slipping away.

Having lived it, myself, I recognized the need to take a break from the day-to-day obligations.

What might help is to re-ignite passions that have been put aside because of work.

What if you could start a side business based on a passion, hobby, skill, or expertise outside of the day job.

That seemed to be a reasonable option for an offer that I could develop.

But everything seems to be focused on AI, these days.

Due to concerns about the time it might take, learning AI hadn’t been a priority.
Plus, there was a fear that “I might be too old to learn it.” Or “It’s just for those 20-somethings.”

But I went ahead, paid for coaching, and started trying out AI on my own.

Slowly but surely, I learned how to use AI, well enough to actually teach other professionals how to use AI to write, create images, and create guides, checklists, resources, and even eBooks.

I now post seven days a week across two platforms, two posts a day with text and images. One recent post reached over 1,900 impressions.

I also wrote and published a book,
The Passion Project Playbook, which achieved #1 New Release in the Home-Based Business Advertising category.

It also became a #1 Bestseller in Auctions & Small Business in April 2025.

I’ve built slide presentations in minutes that used to take me weeks. And when something changes the day before a workshop, I’m able to use AI to help me update the slides in minutes.

I’ve used AI to create my logo, and I’m in the process of redesigning and rebranding my business with the help of AI.

I’ve also used AI to design lead magnets, help build and update my website, and set up the funnels that promote my offers.

With AI’s help, I’m able to create marketing content that’s not only bringing in new viewers, but viewers and clients who fit the description of my ideal client.

None of this was happening early on in my online business “career.”

So yes, AI helped me build real momentum for a functional business.

It’s still growing, and I’m pleased at the direction it’s taking.

But I have to be precise about
how, because this is where I believe many people get it wrong.

The thing nobody tells you: AI doesn’t build your business. It builds drafts.

This is the single most important sentence in this post, so I’ll say it plainly:

AI doesn’t create your business. It doesn’t even create your content. It creates drafts.

What makes it all work is the collaboration between you and AI, working together.

AI hands you a starting point. Then you pour in your unique knowledge, your hard-earned experience, your voice, and your judgment.

You then edit. You cross out the parts that aren’t true to how it really is for you, and replace them with what you know as your truth, your knowledge, your passion, and your expertise.

That’s what turns a generic draft into a passion-based business that’s unmistakably yours.

When I create a post now, ChatGPT or Claude might write a draft based on the information I feed it. But I then go back and forth editing it and making it my own.

Sometimes AI gives me ideas to consider, which sparks my own ideas. It gives me the clay. But I’m still the one who shapes it, because I’m the only one who knows me, my experience, and what I’m here to share.

If you take nothing else from this, take that. The blank page is gone. But the wisdom still has to come from you.

Now for the part that might be controversial

After 30 years of working with patients, helping them improve their lives, this is what I’ve learned, and it’s the opposite of what the gurus might tell you:

Your age and experience aren’t a liability in the AI era.

They’re actually your single biggest advantage.

Quote card: AI made content infinite. Trust is the one thing it can’t fake. Quote by Doug Kalunian, Mastering Your Wellbeing.

Now ask yourself: who on this planet has spent their entire career building trust as a professional discipline? You have.

Therapists and counselors don’t just
hope people trust them. Earning trust, ethically and carefully, is literally your job. Your profession is built on it, just as mine was.

So while a 25-year-old is trying to present as being the authority with AI-generated confidence, you already have the asset that AI can’t replicate: the ability to build trust.

That’s not a gap you need to close. It’s a quality, an asset, you’ve been building for thirty years.

I’ll be honest about the catch, because pretending otherwise would be its own kind of dishonesty.

Earning trust in a therapy office and earning it in a social media platform are not the same skill. It doesn’t transfer automatically to a screen full of strangers. There’s a learning curve.

You earned trust in a room of one. Now you’re learning to earn it in a feed of thousands, whether online in social media, on a Zoom call, or in an auditorium event you host.

But you’re starting that climb from far higher up than you think. And that changes everything.

Let me share what this looks like in a real person.

Her name is Ginny. She’s a therapist in her 60s who wanted to write a book about intergenerational communication.

Ginny H., a therapist in her 60s and beta testing program participant, smiling during a coaching call.

Ginny H

Ginny was a beta participant in my coaching program at no cost.
During one of our calls, she spontaneously offered the testimonial, below.
I had not asked for it.

When we started, Ginny was so afraid of AI, she hadn’t even downloaded ChatGPT.

Her daughter had encouraged her to try, but it was the fear that kept winning. She came to me for coaching, and we worked together inside my program.

Within a week, she was chatting with AI. She’d signed up for ChatGPT and within a couple of weeks, she had an outline for her book.

In around 6 weeks, she had a complete first draft of her book. All 15 chapters. And she’d already started making books for her grandchildren.

Six weeks, fifteen chapters, from a woman who was scared to download an AI app.

“Without you, I had never ever envisioned this… EVER. I thought it’s going to
take me 5-6 years…And since I’ve met you, it’s like I’ve just flourished, and I
can actually see my dream coming closer. You don’t know the power that
you’ve given me… when I lie awake, I think, ‘Oh my God, if I hadn’t met you,
I would have never learned all this.’ Your name will be in the front of my

book. The main person who brought my dream to life.”

Note: Ginny’s pace was her own. Some people move faster, many move slower, and plenty take months rather than weeks. Her story shows what’s possible. Not what’s promised.

I want you to notice something easy to miss.

ChatGPT was free and available to Ginny the entire time. Technology was never the missing piece.

What she needed wasn’t a smarter tool. It was a
trusted human to walk her across the fear.

AI didn’t transform Ginny. A trusted relationship,
with AI as the tool, did.

That’s the crux of it. That’s everything I’ve been trying to relay, in one woman’s words.

Since then, I’ve run workshops where the people who paid to register and showed up for the event were my exact ideal clients.

For me, it was the proof I needed that showing up, doing the work, and reaching out with something that I believe in, can work.

Once again, I can’t promise that for everyone, since results vary on so many factors.

So, how do you use ChatGPT to build your own unique business?

Here’s my honest answer:

You use AI to eliminate the "blank page syndrome," not to replace your voice.

You let it draft posts, outlines, slides, lead magnets, a website, and more.

Then you do the part that only you can do: make it true to who you are. Your history. Your stories. Your authentic self.

Lean into your decades of experience instead of hiding them, because that experience is the very thing AI can’t fake, and what your competitors don’t have.

And always remember that the business isn’t built by AI. It’s built by the passion, experience, and trust that you’ve spent a lifetime learning and developing.

You’ve earned it.

You don’t need to become a tech person. You just need to become
yourself, amplified.
